Time Licenses

Time-limited usage rights, not ownership.

A license is fundamentally different from a master or publishing stake: it grants permission to use a work for a defined period and purpose, without transferring ownership. When the term ends, the rights revert to the owner. On IPexchange, licenses let a buyer secure usage rights for a set time while the creator retains full ownership.

Usage, not ownership

With a license you are not buying a piece of the work’s cap table — you are buying the right to use it under agreed terms. That might mean using a track in a project, a defined territory, or a specific type of exploitation, for the length of the term. Because ownership never changes hands, the creator keeps their master and publishing intact.

Term and scope

Every license is defined by its term (for example, one, three, or five years, or perpetual) and its scope — what uses are permitted and where. These specifics are set by the seller when listing and are spelled out in the license agreement. At the end of a fixed term, the rights simply revert to the owner unless renewed.

How the deal works here

The seller lists the work and offers a license with a defined term and terms of use. You pay a one-time fee through IPexchange to secure the license for that period. Unlike master and publishing stakes, a license does not put you on the ownership split — it is a usage agreement, and its exact permissions live in the contract.

What the buyer gets

  • The right to use the work for a defined term and purpose
  • Clear, contract-defined scope of permitted uses
  • Lower cost than acquiring ownership

What the seller gives

  • Temporary usage rights for the agreed term
  • No ownership — the work stays fully theirs
  • Rights revert automatically when the term ends

Who it's good for

Creators who want income without giving up ownership; buyers who need usage rights for a project or period rather than a permanent stake.
